4 Tips for doing business safely

One in five entrepreneurs falls victim to cybercriminals. To reduce the risk for our customers, we at Valk Solutions are constantly working on the security of our software. We do everything we can to ensure that your data does not fall into the wrong hands. Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean you’re done. In addition to our software, you use even more applications, such as email, internet banking and order portals. That is why we give 4 practical tips to protect your company.

1. Use strong passwords
Cybersecurity experts recommend using complex passwords of at least 12 characters. Criminals use automatic hacking tools to crack passwords. The longer the password, the harder it is to crack. A simple password of 4 numbers or letters can be cracked within seconds. But with a complex password of 12 characters, this becomes almost impossible. Therefore, use complex passwords everywhere, including in ASPOS.

2. Activate multi-factor authentication
If possible, use multi-factor authentication. This can be done very quickly using authenticator apps from Google or Microsoft. This ensures that criminals cannot simply log into your accounts if they find out your username and password. An application will first check whether it is you who is logging in. If this cannot be confirmed, access will not be granted. You can also activate multi-factor authentication in ASPOS.

3. Beware of phishing
Criminals are developing ever smarter phishing emails. It seems as if you are receiving an email from a trusted relation. In reality, a criminal is behind it, trying to tempt you to download an attachment or click on a link. Once you do this, you will be taken to a bogus website, or malware will be automatically downloaded onto your computer. Phishing emails are often emails you do not expect and can be recognized by an incorrect sender and a link or attachment that must be opened, which is usually urgent. So don’t be fooled.

4. Install security updates
Security updates are also essential. Software vendors regularly release new versions to fix vulnerabilities in the software. These updates must, of course, be installed. In practice, this is often postponed because updates take time, but this means that any security holes remain open for an unnecessarily long time. Our advice is always to install updates as soon as possible so that you can work with the latest and safest version of your software.
